UNDECIDED LITTLE MAN (cm.55X22 - 1987)

I have always been amused by the idea that a coat hanger is commonly called "little man" in Italian, intimately connecting the world of objects and the human world. Adding other hooks to the coat hanger I obtained an "undecided little man", equipped with various suspension possibilities. I offered the poor little man (poor because the definition of "little man" implies that it is small both physically and in a moral or spiritual sense) opportunities of choice that it did not previously possess, albeit putting it in a situation of constant dilemma about which hook to use. I somehow opened a way for it, although it is full of doubts and possibilities... Originally, I thought of turning the little man upside down, in order to use the hooks placed inferiorly as a wall keychain; I then preferred to remove all practical function from the object in order to leave it free to live its existential perplexities. The sort of indecisions that found a concrete form in the little man actually reflect those that tore my soul apart at the time: I was a human being with a thousand possibilities who could not channel her energies in one direction, continually dragged to one side and the other at the mercy of events. At the time of the creation of the object, my existence was full of doubts and hesitations too, I did not know what to do with my life and I kept going from one senseless experience to another. On could say that I unknowingly projected my current vital state into the coat hanger, becoming aware much later of my lacking of a centre of gravity, my weakness and insecurity. The indecision of the little man actually anticipated by years my becoming aware of my existential condition. The content of the work is not only personal, but can also be read as a general observation on how the male human is many times – to the detriment of his dominant role – hesitant and doubtful (implying that the feminine proves more resolute and determined). Here too, as in "Emancipated Metals", an object of common use gives up the logic of its functionand takes on a new existence, a new meaning. What is transient in the work is the shape of the coat hanger, whose appearance has a relative importance for the purposes of the existential meaning of the object. What is original is the change of perspective that takes place: after the transformation of the coat hanger into a small man with doubts, it is difficult to return to the previous vision of an inanimate object whose existence remains confined to a closet. After all, the real life of a coat hanger is that of an insecure being, hesitant inwardly. Such is its original nature.
