I enjoyed applying the principle of anagrams to people's names. I was interestedin witnessing the birth, for each individual, of a "different" life, perhaps the real life hidden behind words, the names that someone else chose for us. In general, I engraved names and their anagrams on glass or mirror panes. Here are some of them.

Anagrams represent an "emancipation" of names. Not only do they add something to the person (or animal in Rolf's case) they refer to, but somehow they designate his/her/its essence. They fit perfectly into the being they designate. For example, my anagram clearly reveals my tension towards spirituality, my volatility as an Aquarius. My father's anagram manifests his creative origins at the art school in Palermo, and the image of a place where you can breathe Giotto's feathers is evocative of his dedication to creativity. Alessandro is a pianist, and he places his sensitivity and gifts in the keys of his instrument. Of my aunt Giuliana, a strongand long-lived woman, I have a memory, represented by grapes in her anagram, of a grape harvest one summer in Friuli. The anagram of Enrico, an eclectic and brilliant artist, highlights primordial chaos as the origin of creativity. My husband Giuseppe turned out to be a "doll awakener", ironic allusion to his notorious shyness. The fact that names are somehow "sacred" and contain a secret meaning is a notion that fascinates me. Someone close to us (our parents) took the trouble to choose a name that would characterize us throughout our lives: this choice on the part of others becomes our responsibility, even our identity, at least from a social point of view. From a deeper point of view, however, our name can hide something important and existential, something that sometimes escapes a careful examination of the person to whom the name refers. Anagrams represent an attempt to unravel the secret names of the people I know, of whom I possess the elements to determine whether the anagram is right or not. Once I accept the anagram as corresponding to the person, this “additional” name enriches that person. My interest in anagrams has continued over time, never exhausting its creative reach. The content of anagrams is the secret life of people, the one for which their very name is not sufficiently suitable to characterize its essence. At the outset, I never have any idea what the search for the anagram will reveal: the point is precisely to keep my mind and heart open to welcome the fruits of my research. Some anagrams quickly imposedthemselves; others took several attempts before appearing to me as appropriate. In any case, there came a time when the anagram was the right one and I declared the research and the work completed. What is transient in anagrams is the starting name: beautiful, ugly, long, short, and significant or not: all names are but the raw material from which to shape my work. What is original is the achievement of a "truth" that adapts only to the particular person to whom the anagram is dedicated. While people's proper names have a shallow reach, anagrams reach deeper levels in souls.
