THERMOLOGIST (cm. 21x35 - 2004)

I removed the glass filament containing blue coloured liquid from an outdoor thermometer and placed it on a transparent Plexiglas plate. Instead of notches with numbers indicating the degrees centigrade of the environment, I drew white dashed lines and segments, each leading from the glass filament to a letter. Instead of marking the temperature, this object thus indicates, as the ambient temperature changes, a sequence of letters. A reading of those letters over time might result in meaningful words: the "Thermologist" is therefore an object theoretically capable of producing meaning, depending on the temperature of the environment. It is a creator of logos, of language. In such a way, I established a direct relationship between ambient temperature and language, two elements usually belonging to different levels of reality. I enjoyed putting chance in a position to make fun of both science and rationality. After all, I have never believed in the power of the mind to rule the world: without a heart, the mind itself is empty. The causes and conditions that led to the work are on the one hand the fascination exertedon me by thermometer filaments as precious, fragile objects, unique as jewels; and on the other hand my obsession with words. Removing the filament from itsusual context and putting it into a different environmentleaves the content of the filament free to indicate, with its fluctuations, elements different from degrees centigrade. It possesses the fantasy of playing with letters; it actually trips science (whichtends to force everything into unique patterns) up. The content of this work is fantasy, the ability to imagine different scenarios for each given situation. After the "heavy" self-portrait of 2000, I felt the need to create something light, transparent, and immaterial. What is transient in this work is the size and shape of the filament, the colour of the liquid contained therein, the random arrangement of the letters on the Plexiglas base. What is original is the ability of the object to create mental operations able to provide the object itself with infinite potential, much wider than its mere scientific use. Within my life, from an existential point of view, this work resembles an interlude between a series of more ponderous works. My distrust of science as an explanation of the world has a counterpart in my trust in fantasy as freedom to create other possible worlds.
